Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage will be remembered by many as a challenging year in the vineyard, especially during Spring with regular rain events causing increased disease pressure.ย Fortunately, McLaren Valeโ€™s vicinity to the ocean prevailed with sea breezes and lower rainfall than other regions reducing the mildew outbreaks.ย  The cool spring gave way to a mild summer and long ripening period which allowed fruit to reach optimum ripeness with lower alcohol levels.ย

Vintage began 2-3weeks later than a โ€˜normalโ€™ vintage, with yields lower than average.ย  The slow ripening and cool temperatures provided perfect natural acidity in whites with fantastic colour in reds

Maker Notes

Batches of Shiraz grapes vinified and matured in oak separately before being blended to deliver a wine with year-to-year consistency of flavour, structure and balance. 15-18 months in French and American oak.

Reviews
93 points | Russ Gallagher, Vino Masters

A fruit-forward and highly approachable McLaren Vale Shiraz, the 2023 Silver Hammer delivers plenty of charm. It shows ripe dark fruits of blackberry and plum laced with warm spice and a light pepper edge. Medium to full-bodied, with moderate tannins and balanced savoury acidity, it also carries a subtle influence of seasoned oak. The palate is generous and juicy, finishing with good texture, a hint of black olive tapenade and lingering spice. A very drinkable, flavour-packed Shiraz offering excellent value and immediate appeal.

93 points | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Richly fruited and instantly appealing, the wine shows blackberry, mixed spice, potpourri, and assorted nut aromas, followed by a generously expressed palate offering succulent fruit intensity and velvety texture. Upfront and flavoursome with a satisfying finish.

92 points | Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion

A core line for Maxwell, named after the Beatles song (which often used to make it into childrenโ€™s school songbooks, even though the lyrics are somewhat gruesome). All estate fruit, this has some typical generosity, though a fair degree of levity, too. Oak, largely older, is well integrated, adding a little nuttiness and spice to dark berries and plum. Itโ€™s a bit up from medium weight, and it drinks so readily, with softly accommodating tannin and nicely resolved, refreshing acidity. This is right in the grove.
