About

In the cave beneath Maxwell’s McLaren Vale estate, three very different fortified wines have been biding their time: this vintage Shiraz, along with a tawny, and a white fortified.

McLaren Vale’s 2022 vintage will be recorded as one of the great years for the region. This Late Bottled Vintage Shiraz was harvested in early autumn and aged in oak for 18 months before bottling.

Rich blackberry and plum aromas melt into layers of dark chocolate, spice, and a velvety finish – perfect with aged blue cheese, dark chocolate tart, or roasted nuts.

Built on Shiraz – the same variety that underpins so many of the region’s classics – this vintage fortified leans into tradition. In the glass, it’s all dark plums, spice and length; the sort of wine that invites you to sit down and stay a while.

Vintage Conditions

McLaren Vale’s 2022 vintage will be recorded as one of the great years for the region, and though volume was down, flavours, colour and structure were all brilliant. The region was in excellent balance, especially compared to Eastern Australia which suffered at the hands of La Niña with excessive rainfall & flooding. After a predictably wet Winter, we progressed through a mild Spring with warm, sunny periods.

At the end of November, we had a cold snap with rain & winds gusting over 100km/hour, which removed some emerging vine flowers, reducing the available number of bunches.

Summer was excellent with warm, dry conditions & no 40°C days, and was followed by a perfect, warm Autumn, with harvesting starting a little later compared to recent years.

Maker Notes

Late picked, while not too ripe (14.5 - 14.8 baumé), part fermented  and fortified while there’s just enough sweetness to balance the acid line. 18 months in barrel.

Limited to 1300 bottles.

Reviews
Tony Love

One of three limited and reserved fortified wines lovingly cared for over many years by the Maxwell clan in their underground cellars in McLaren Vale. Crafted from majority 2013 vintage barrels of the classic Madeira variety Verdelho, long grown in South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, fortified sensitively with brandy spirit and blended with older parcels to add depth and balance, this has a captivating golden colour to set the mood, its tone lush, smooth and generously citrus and stone fruit rich. Think white flower tea with honey, mandarin marmalade, roasted apricot and quince with a gentle brandy layering underneath, all woven into a gentle liqueur style that suits richer fruit desserts and well-flavoured cheeses.
