Eocene 'Ancient Earth' Shiraz 2022 - Magnum
This is a Maxwell Estate Wine.
The Maxwell Eocene Shiraz is a terroir focussed, single-vineyard Shiraz from the most northern part of the estate on the corner of Olivers and Chalk Hill roads in McLaren Vale.
The vines are a special clone called 1654 and planted in 1994, are now given special treatment of leaf plucking, cultivation and cover crops to enhance the individual characters of the berries.
The soil profile comprises alluvial grey-brown loam over limestone – specifically Blanche Point Formation with Tortachilla Limestone. The geology of this area was created 35 million years ago during the Eocene Epoch, hence the name given to this wine.

"This is stunningly beautiful and enticing with dark fruit richness, violet, tapenade and roasted hazelnut characters on the nose. The concentrated palate delivers delectable fruit intensity with plush texture and beautifully melded tannins, finishing superbly long and sophisticated."

"Deep and dark fruited in the glass. Aromas of plum, spice, anise, bramble and dried herbs, complex and lifted. Full of dark, brooding fruits on the palate, plum, mulberry, mocha and sweet spice. Long, mouth-filling and plush, with just the right amount of tannin and acid providing texture and cut."

"This tightly wrapped, brooding McLaren Vale Shiraz offers up a dense core of powerful fruits with blackberry aromas well supported by savoury earth, iron filings and spicy complexity, as seen in many of the best wines from McLaren Vale. It’s then quite muscular in feel with fruits of the forest flavours wrapped up with mouthcoating tannins before delivering a lengthy if slightly closed finish. This needs a couple of years to open up and show all it has to offer."
